Hi, I'm Keen, and I'd like to tell you the story of how I got my blood sugar under control and became the superhero of my own story.
I was an active kid with tons of energy. I was constantly on the move, whether it was riding my bike, playing soccer with my friends, or running from the neighbor’s dog. Whenever my parents were able to pry me away from the great outdoors, they made sure I kept a healthy diet. Their favorite line was, “Keen, finish your veggies”.
When I hit my teen years, I began ignoring my parents’ advice. I skipped vegetables in favor of potato chips, guzzled sugary sodas like they were going out of style, and passed up active events to stay inside and watch television, a trend which continued into college. I turned the Freshman Fifteen into the Freshman Twenty.
Once I got out into the working world, I found it even harder to focus on my health. I spent all day behind a desk and ate all the wrong things, which is easy to do when you’re surrounded by donuts in the break room and cake in the conference room. After a long day dragging myself from meeting to meeting and dealing with demanding clients, the couch seemed much more inviting than a trip to the gym. My weight kept climbing, and I continued to lose energy.
Soon, I realized that I was tired all the time, and most days I could barely drag myself out of bed. I was constantly hungry and could never get enough to drink. Realizing that something was wrong, I decided to see a doctor who sent me for the blood test that changed my life. I was “pre diabetic”. My first thought was to panic; my second thought was to take action.
The Call to Action
I knew that I needed to take back control of my life, but I had to start small. In between meetings, I got up and walked around my building, and I made sure to bring healthy snacks and water into the conference room. After work, I went home and walked around the block. Soon, that block turned into a mile, and that walk turned into a jog. With small, simple strides such as these, my weight began to drop and my energy started to return.
Soon, my blood sugar was under control, and now, I feel like I can do anything. Diabetes might be the villain, but I fought back, and you can, too. Take the smart, simple strides needed to get your blood sugar in check, and become the superhero of your own story.
